  15. This IS a shareware package, and does require a registration fee if
  16. you choose to continue using it after 30 days.     The registration
  17. fee for this "prerelease" product is currently $20 US.  It will

  30.     Register MR/2 ICE for $20 now.    It will go up to $25 later,
  31.     possibly a tad higher if/when news is complete and feature-packed.
  32.     You will get emailed a registration key that will prevent the
  33.     60-day nag screen and will (later) enable some control over the
  34.     X-Mailer line.
  35.     
  36.     If you want a disk mailed to you, add $5 US.  Otherwise your
  37.     acknowledgement is the emailed key file.

  39.     Registration by an individual includes the capability of using
  40.     this registered copy at home and/or at work.  YOU are registered,
  41.     not a particular machine or system.

  43.     ONCE YOU ARE REGISTERED, I consider you a registered user.    I will

  124. 2. PRELIMINARY RELEASE - PREFACE
  125. ================================
  126. Thank you for trying my latest addition to the MR/2 family of electronic 
  127. messaging software for OS/2 ... the MR/2 Internet Cruiser Edition.    
  128. While my QWK-based mail readers are relatively well-known in the OS/2 
  129. world, direct Internet access is a bit newer to me.  As always, please 
  130. feel free to offer ideas, suggestions or critisms.    I will take all of 
  131. it into account while developing this product.
  132.  
  133. What MR/2 ICE is at this time is an Internet EMail client.    It can read 
  134. mail via a POP3 mail server, and I have some support for direct SMTP 
  135. hooks almost ready.  Future plans are to, while beefing up the email 
  136. interface, add newsreading to its function.  You might see some minor 
  137. evidence of where the newsreader might fit into this scheme.
  138.  
  139. For those of you who know my work already, you know that I like to have 
  140. lots of options, including optional pieces of the user interface.  I 
  141. have attempted to continue this theme with MR/2 ICE.  You'll find things 
  142. like toolbars and status bars configurable, even to the point of 
  143. hiding them.
  144.  
  145. At this time there are some things that haven't yet been added or made
  146. to work.  On the other side of the coin, there are no limits to the
  147. "shareware" version.  I don't like crippleware, but I will no doubt
  148. offer some incentive to register, or add a minor annoyance or two if
  149. you don't.  Right now there is none of this.
  150.  
  151. Let's get to some simple instructions.  MR/2 ICE quick start:
  152.  
  153. o    Make a directory and unzip MR/2 ICE into it.  You may set up
  154.     a desktop icon to invoke MR/2 ICE or simply run it from the
  155.     command line.  When running MR/2 ICE for the first time, it
  156.     will jump right to the Network configuration screen.  Fill
  157.     this out carefully.  Press OK.
  158.     
  159. o    Once the network settings have been filled in, please select the
  160.     User Preferences tab and make any desired changes.    Close the window
  161.     by clicking in the corner.
  162.     
  163. o    You're ready to start.  MR/2 ICE will, by default, poll the POP3
  164.     server every 2 minutes.  Adjust accordingly.  Mail is kept in a
  165.     MAIL subdirectory of your MR/2 ICE software directory.
  166.     
  167. o    Command line switches:
  168.  
  169.         /Iinifile    Specifies a file where user interface
  170.                     settings (e.g., toolbar visibility and
  171.                     position, window positions) are kept.
  172.                     The default is mr2i.ini.
  173.                 
  174.         /Mmailcfg    Specifies the file in which to keep and
  175.                     access your EMail configuration.
  176.                 
  177.         /S            Suppresses the polling and delivery of
  178.                     email.    No network access is attempted.
  179.                     
  180.         /T            Toolbar-less operation.  Bypasses the crash
  181.                     caused by some bug in Soft & GUI's CmdLine.exe.
  182.                     
  183.         /L            Logs to stdout ... must redirect to a log file.
  184.  
  185.         /Fn         Select a default font for custom control windows.
  186.                     (Necessary only if problems appear in install)
  187.                     
  188.         /Pnnn        Specify an alternate Pop3 port.
  189.         
  190.         /-            Minimize on start
  191.         
  192.                 
  193. o    New message:  Click on the first toolbar icon, or select NEW
  194.     from the File menu.
  195.     
  196.     Fill out the header editing screen and press OK.  Now, type
  197.     in the message and press SEND.    Depending on the options in
  198.     your User Preference settings, you may be shown the header
  199.     editing screen again.  Press OK to send it.
  200.     
  201. o    Replying:  Viewing any message, press on the REPLY button.
  202.     You will be prompted with the Header Editing screen (optionally),
  203.     the allowed to edit the reply.    The simple editor allows you
  204.     to toggle back to the original (the "<" button) and then
  205.     forward to the reply (the ">" button).  It also allows you to
  206.     split the screen and show both windows (the "-" button").
  207.  
  208. o    When incoming messages are first displayed, an empty checkbox
  209.     icon is next to them ("fresh" incoming mail is colored in red
  210.     text, too).  Once read, a black check mark is attached.  If
  211.     you reply, the message is marked with a RED checkmark.
  212.  
  213. o    The Out Box shows all messages sent.
  214.  
  215. o    The Right Mouse Button (RMB) is used often.  Try it inside message
  216.     index lists, on toolbar buttons, and inside address fields.
  217.  
  218. o    Selecting message(s).  Mark the message(s) you want to open with the 
  219.     mouse and use the RMB to call up the popup menu (or use the main 
  220.     menu).    Click on OPEN.    Alternately, double click on any single 
  221.     message will to open it.
  222.     
  223. o    Outbox:  Unsent messages have a mailbox icon.  Sent message switch to
  224.     an envelope icon.  There is a resend option on the popup menu (RMB)
  225.     and on the viewer screen.  Resending fron the viewer screen provides
  226.     an optional chance to modify the message first.
  227.  
  228.  
  229. 3. LIST OF FEATURES
  230. ====================
  231.  
  232. o    POP3 or SMTP reads.
  233.  
  234. o    POP3 or SMTP sends.
  235.  
  236. o    Auto configures to existing IAK setup, when available.
  237.  
  238. o    Use of pop-up or "context" menus abound.  Try the right mouse button
  239.     in index lists, on toolbar buttons and in address fields.
  240.  
  241. o    Persistently sizable windows almost everwhere.    Multiple message
  242.     windows can each have different positions.
  243.  
  244. o    Toolbars w/bubble hints ("tooltips"), status bars, progression
  245.     indicators.  Optional whenever possible.  Hint bubble display and/or
  246.     delay configurable.  A RMB click will always display hints, if they
  247.     are turned on.
  248.     
  249. o    Font and color selection dialogs, as well as drag/drop support from
  250.     OS/2 pallets for message viewer windows.
  251.  
  252. o    Powerful message viewer and editor.  Things like a split screen
  253.     editor.  Spelling checker and thesaurus available (as separate files,
  254.     get the MR/2 QWK-reader files via www/ftp).  Simple things like Rot13
  255.     support and case conversions supported.  Mono/PS font toggle (you can 
  256.     configure the font for each mode).
  257.  
  258. o    Formated *and* draft printing.
  259.  
  260. o    Selectable reply "templates" allow you to boiler-plate needed replies.
  261.     Powerful set of reply-time variables available.
  262.     
  263. o    Auto-checking for new messages via configurable time period.  Beeping
  264.     when mail arrives, and (optional) periodic beeping when new mail has
  265.     arrived and MR/2 has not acquired focus.  Minimized icon and task list
  266.     show new mail count.
  267.     
  268. o    UUEncoding/decoding.  Multiple files-per-message supported.
  269.  
  270. o    Address book with description, email address, notes and "tags"
  271.  
  272. o    Pop up calendar (will be enhanced to provide to-do list/appointments).

  274. o    Multiple account support (preliminary ... looking for testers/input).

  298. o    No MIME ... yet.

  300. o    No manual or online help.  I have an online help framework in place,
  301.     but all panels are empty. I will get to this soon, then the manual.
  302.     
  303. o    PGP support to come.

  305. o    Still many areas that need optimization and minor rework/threading for
  306.     performance reasons.  For example: formated printing AND pop purges.
  307.     
  308. o    No Filters.  Yell loud .. my existing comprehensive text-search logic
  309.     will make this powerful and easy.
  310.     
  311. o    No Real-time text searching through messages.
  312.  
  313. o    Message Editor ... Block->Paragraph dialog is not yet functioning.

  315. o    Message drag/drop menu items are non-functional for now.

  334. Changes included in v0.99d

  337. o    Well, address groups are close.  The whole idea, because I wanted to 
  338.     do it a certain way, is taking longer than I guessed.  With a couple 
  339.     of more hours, I would have included it.  The menu option for 
  340.     Address Group Maintenance is disabled.    It is relatively functional, 
  341.     barring a few bugs, and can be enabled by running with the "//" flag 
  342.     on the command line.  This is just so those interested can comment 
  343.     on the overall layout.    It is NOT meant for real use, and may change 
  344.     before finalized.  SENDS do not recognize Groups yet.
  345.     
  346.     In general, groups will allow for lists of raw addresses, aliases, 
  347.     other groups and/or lists of all of these contained within an 
  348.     external file.    Resolution will be fully recursive/nested, so that a 
  349.     group can be defined as a set of other groups, and each of those can 
  350.     contain more groups.  Address Book entries can contain group names, 
  351.     also.  I will add code to prevent circular references.
  352.     
  353.     There's a chance I may release a mid-week version, if I can complete
  354.     and test all of this.  I must also finalize my registration key system
  355.     in the next day or two.
  356.  
  357. o    Speedup and memory leaks plugged.  Found these while looking for
  358.     the reason the message window opened so progressively slower.
  359.     Found that I had left in some debugging code (checking the heap)
  360.     2-3 times each message was displayed.  Removing these has sped up
  361.     the message opening greatly.
  362.  
  363. o    Added code to SMTP import process to better recover from file
  364.     in use errors.    (LDA is still delivering when ICE tries to import).
  365.  
  366. o    Progression indicator on pop receive.  Resized both indicators
  367.     to be smaller and allow more text to show.
  368.  
  369. o    Country date settings are now used for most (all?) date/time
  370.     displays.
  371.     
  372. o    External editor is now functional.    You can alwasy use the editor
  373.     by checking the box on Options->User Preferences, or you can invoke
  374.     it on demand via the Tools->Edit externally menu item from within
  375.     the message viewer.
  376.  
  377. o    SMTP mode would still include LaMail's NDX files.  It was a case
  378.  
  379. o    Pressing DEL in the message viewer, then cancel, closed the message.
  380.  
  381. o    Suppressed auto poll on startup if auto-poll is off
  382.  
  383. o    Toolbar display toggle bug.  Toolbar would sometimes appear twice.
  384.  
  385. o    Pop3 long UIDL server error messages handled better
  386.  
  387. o    Fixed Text searches inside any editor window. Again.  This time
  388.     I believe it's fixed for good :)

  390. o    Ouch.  I accidently hit ALT-C in the reply editor and the message
  391.     closed w/out warning or chance to save.  Fixed.

  409. What a week.  It started off with almost immediately finding that several
  410. key features of MR/2 ICE were broken by the B release.    I believe this one
  411. to be in much better shape.
  412.  
  413. I've got groups/lists pretty close, and the external editor code was
  414. yanked at the last second because of a crash in one spot.  Next week,
  415. I'm sure.
  416.  
  417. BEEP on window open.  I tried to get rid of this, but couldn't wait
  418. any longer.  Sorry!  It's only when you double click and the
  419. message part is over the click spot.  I'll get it, but it will be
  420. annoying for a week.
  421.  
  422. o    Fixed problems with checking for mail under various user settings.
  423.  
  424. o    Pasting text with quoting cleaned up.  Still needs another pass :(
  425.  
  426. o    Addresses of the form "nick knight <nick@secant.com>" are now 
  427.     normalized so that picky SMTP server's should no longer complain.
  428.     
  429. o    Ctrl+, Ctrl-, shift del  should now work as they're supposed to.
  430.  
  431. o    Cursor pos when header is scrolled off screen starts at current line.
  432.  
  433. o    UUEncode process wasn't closing source file.
  434.  
  435. o    Complex multi-addresses can now be up to 512 bytes.  Still working on 
  436.     groups/distribution lists.

  438. o    Crash when sending and status displays too long (rare).  Fixed.

  440. o    SMTP Receive and all related file-type problems have been fixed.
  441.     Sorry!    Includes "can't create folder" problem and user not registered

  444. o    AutoSave and sending would sometimes conflict and crash.  I do believe
  445.     this was the crash that was so prevelant, yet random enough to not
  446.     be recreatable "on demand".  My mail has been stable for a couple of 
  447.     days; I'm sure you guys will tell me if something's still loose in the
  448.     code.
  449.  
  450. o    Ctrl-E is now an accelerator to the internal text editor.  This
  451.     is available on both the mail index and message windows.  The Message
  452.     menu's "Edit file" item is now hooked to this editor window.
  453.     
  454. o    Notebook page buttons a tad larger
  455.  
  456. o    Toolbar FIND on MW no longer loses text highlight.
  457.  
  458. o    Problem with POP receive when lines *started* with a '.'.  Fixed. Was
  459.     messing up around 1 out of every 77 uuencoded messages.
  460.  
  461. o    Did I mention the calculator?  No??  Well, I added a simple, integer-
  462.     only (no decimal points) calculator to the Utilities.  I use this
  463.     thing often, but can never find it fast.  Now I know where it is.
  464.     This item is an almost snap-in part from Secant Technologies'
  465.     ObjectPM toolkit, provided there as a sample.  I plan on spending
  466.     very little time improving this, except to add a keyboard interface
  467.     and full decimal support (all easy).  If you find it useful, great,
  468.     if not, don't use it :)
  469.  
  470. o    More fields opened up for hi-end ASCII.  Folder form in particular.
  471.  
  472. o    Templates are now editable via the Utilities menu.    This is brand
  473.     new code, so I'm watching for bugs.  Still can't make a NEW
  474.     template, but I ran out of time.

  476. o    Text Editor fix ups and enhancements.

  483. Again, my todo list above didn't get all the attention I had hoped to give
  484. it.  Still, it was a pretty productive week.  The best news is that many
  485. crashes have been eliminated.  There seems to be one more pesky crash
  486. scenario that I'm having trouble catching (the crash-on-send), but I've
  487. added some code to try and help.  Ironically, since doing this, I have
  488. been unable to make it crash.  I may have fixed it while making other  
  489. code changes, but only time will tell.    Reporting crash addresses is
  490. very important with this release.  Thanks!

  492. QUERY:    Has anyone created any from-other-mailer conversion tools that
  493. they'd like to share?  I've had many requests for conversion tools, and
  494. I'd certainly like to supply them, and I know I can.  Time is the 
  495. problem.  I can see how to convert PMMail's stuff to my format, but if 
  496. I stop to do this, I don't get to add important features to my own work.
  497. Any REXX guru's want to show there stuff off and get some recognition?
  498. Of particular interest are scripts that would convert address books and
  499. folders from PM Mail, Post Road Mailer, Ultimail/LaMail and things like
  500. PINE.
  501.  
  502. o    Added a command line switch: /- which tells MR/2 ICE to minimize
  503.     on load.  There's still some screens displayed, but then it does
  504.     minimize.
  505.     
  506. o    The /S command line options was broken.  Fixed.  Also, configuring
  507.     for NO POLLING was ignored.  Fixed.
  508.     
  509. o    Crash scenario:  When paging through message using the next/prev
  510.     menu command or toolbar options, MR/2 ICE did not properly set a
  511.     complete message state for each message.  This could case crashes
  512.     under some circumstance.
  513.     
  514. o    Crash scenario: Folders not opening, exiting the program abruptly and
  515.     without explanation, and crashing.    This was a big error on my part.
  516.     Each folder would actually create another copy of the SEND thread,
  517.     and this would do some very strange things.  Fixed.
  518.     
  519. o    Crash scenario:  Address Book maintenance.    Tags/Aliases longer than
  520.     a couple of characters would cause a crash when the address book
  521.     as closed/saved.  Fixed (sorry!).
  522.     
  523. o    New prompt option: disable pop3 counter reset warning/prompt.
  524.  
  525. o    Send toolbar icon now has correct bubble hint.    Send is no longer
  526.     disabled in the menu for "new" message.
  527.  
  528. o    Bubble hints now use smaller font ... this is possible because:
  529.  
  530. o    All 3 Secant-based DLL's are "new" and offer several low level bug
  531.     fixes, including better font handling.    Was not able to "fix" the
  532.     Cirrus chipset bug, but smaller fonts now space correctly.    I hope to
  533.     freeze these DLL's soon and be able to release updates without the
  534.     DLL's.

  536. o    Index cellbox: highlighted text is now WHITE on black background.
  537.  
  538. o    Address book listings now show tags/aliases.
  539.  
  540. o    Tried to increase secaondary thread robustness.  Increased all stack
  541.     size slightly.    More error checking; more overflow detection code 
  542.     added to low-level TCPIP interface code.

  544. o    Password on POP3 prompt form is now masked from the user.

  546. o    Opened up many form fields to hi-end ASCII character for the European
  547.     and Chinese (and other, I guess) uses that have requested this.  Please
  548.     let me know if this helps!

  550. o    ALT-Q pasting would often crash.  I rewrote this routine, and while it
  551.     does not crash, it still needs work.  Next release for sure.
  552.     
  553. o    Sig editor added and functional.  This will change some next release,
  554.     but at least you can edit the default SIG file.  I missed having the 
  555.     complete template editor ready by an hour or two ... next release for
  556.     sure.
  557.     
  558. o    Simple file editor included on utility menu.  Simple?  Don't know
  559.     about that, but I've got more to add to it.  I got tired of using
  560.     the E editor to open files for "clipping" sections.  This will work

  575. o    Removed the Edit signature file menu item.    I added much code to 
  576.     this feature, but it isn't yet workable (made a bigger monster
  577.     than originally planned out of the editor).  This will be readded

  581.     for "mr2i.sig".  Note that the sig file itself is just a very simple

  585.     selectable reply templates are you want, each with custom

  830.     this, as no information is lost, although cleanup gets more cumbersome.

  832.     nor does it record the new "sent" date.  You can't tell if it's been
  833.     resent, nor when, nor how many times.  I'm looking for ideas on what
